Welcome to the Tampa Bay Coin Club. We have been serving the Tampa Bay Area since 1958!

President's Message
We held our meeting as scheduled at a "new" location on January 14th and were quite pleased with the turnout -- some 29 people in attendance AND it is concluded that we made some good progress regarding operation of the club AND after brief discussion we took nominations from the floor for officers and directors of TBCC for the 2010 calendar year. This will allow us to give all members notice of "Election Night" now scheduled for the February 11th, the next regularly scheduled membership meeting. The nominees will be listed in the "current events" section of this web site. Other nominations will be open and accepted from the floor prior to the membership vote.

Some other good news - there were a couple of volunters willing to put their energies into a "newsletter" which when compiled should be available both electronically and in hard copy at our meetings.  And for those who submit their names, TBCC will send out newletter via US Mail to their home addresses. (Give us a little time on the newsletter but we will get this project going.)

Some other good news -- Charles Cave, an experienced collector and sometime dealer/seller is going to start a series of talks at the conclusions of our meetings regarding grading coins.  The first segment will be titled "Lighting, rotating, handling your coin". The second segment scheduled for March will be titled "Did you see??". And depending on the level of interest, we will utilize the third segment titled "Grade your Coin" and conclude with a contest to determine the best grader --- we will call it the "Charles Cave Challenge"  (and to make it interesting TBCC will offer several attractive prizes).

A reminder to all members -- please send in item descriptions for the coins which you want in the February auction by January 31st. It is generally concluded that each coin or each lot of coins should have value of at least $10. Follow the web site instruction in the "Auction" section.

Tampa Bay Coin Club will sponsor and hold three coin shows in 2010. According to Bourse Chairman, Mark Palermo, the dates for our shows will be March 6th, May 29th and October 16th, to be held at the American Legion on Kennedy Boulevard, Tampa.

I attended the FUN Show in Orlando. It was my observation that the show was "all" that is was advertised to be, meaning that there were a lot of dealers and considerable inventory for everyone to consider as they passed the many  tables.  It appeared to me there was a significant number of gold coins, both U.S. and foreign, available for the novices, to those just searching and want bullion, and to those seasoned and well funded collectors. I thought that Tampa area dealers and collectors were well represented -- and hope all did well -- either selling or picking up on their wants and needs. And for 2011, the drive to FUN Show will be much shorter as the January FUN Show will be at the Tampa Convention Center in downtown Tampa.

On a different note, I do not know how many people who are members of local coin clubs are members of the ANA. In my opinion everyone should be a member as the annual dues of $35 are quite affordable and the benefits are many including access to the Manley Library. One of their most recent benefits announced was that ANA members could have digital access to Coin World magazine and titles. The membership also allows access to Coin Values, and Paper Money Values. As this report is written I can attest to having read the December and January issues of Coin World which came out. Now I must admit that I have grown to like a hard copy magazine which can then be saved, only to be discarded months down the road.  It took a little manuvering to get the format and proper size to read the on-line version, but it was a "fun" read.  Not sure how the advertisers will like it as in my case, I "breezed" (expended no time) through the advertisements -- kind of like recording a TV program, watching when I am ready to watch and "fast-forwarding" through the ads. So ANA members give it a try -- (I can just hear some of the "old boys" complaining!!!).  I believe the one-year access has a current value of about $10.00 and there is no indication that the program of free access will extend beyond one year -- but that is OK, members can form their own opinions of usefulness and a decision, one year down the road.

It goes without saying that TBCC is at a "very very critical stage"  and that the first of 2010 becomes "extremely critical" to the mere existence of the club. I truly hope that all members will make an effort to be at our February meeting.

We continue to look for new ways to make our web site more attractive and interesting. Sooo -- starting immediately we will be listing "classified ads" for members and our readers.  Our guidelines will be fairly simple -- if you need something from a coin or currency perspective, let our readers know by listing it on our TBCC web site.  No cost while we go through a "trial period".  Write it as any other ad that might appear in a newspaper or magazine and send to me (as you would an auction item).  The "classified" section will be on the auction page. There is one interesting development from the web site -- there have been several inquiries from non-members.
