Welcome to the Tampa Bay Coin Club. We have been serving the Tampa Bay Area since 1958!

President's Message
Hope everyone had the opportunity to take in the Clearwater Coin Club show this past 4th of July weekend. They provided a new look with their location in the "Ballroom" of the Hilton in the Carillon area -- not the easiest place to find in terms of location (and the lack of signage) BUT a site that I think served the dealers and visitors well. Thought it was a "good show".

The Summer FUN show followed and was held back in Orlando. Once again a good show -- certainly no where near the size of Winter FUN -- but there was good inventory on the floor for just about any size budget.  The dealers I spoke with and conversations that were overheard indicated that dealers were pleased with the level of activity and their sales.

It was evident who did the best job (most accurate) grading the ten coins featured in our May grading contest - The Charles Cave TBCC Challenge -- a contest which  allowed members to "grade" a variety of selected coins.  Bill Lynch was right on with his opinions and grades and won the award -- our congratulations go to Bill.  To other TBCC members -- may it be suggested that you approach Bill at future meetings, particularly if you have a question about a coin -- I think he will give you a fairly accurate opinion.

During May we started something new which is expected to be part of our monthly meeting -- specifically a monthly report on the precious metals market.  AND to add a little bit of fun TBCC is going to sponsor a contest which calls for member to "guess" or specifically predict the "spot" prices of gold, silver and platinum at the closing bell to the penny, for Friday, December 31, 2010. Contest rules are stated on the entry  the form  available during May and June. All entries must be in the hands of Gary Ohrmund, contest chairman by June 15, 2010 at 9:00 p.m.   The winners of the contest and the awarding of prizes -- a gold coin, a silver coin and a copper coin will be announced at our first meeting in January 2011.  Let's find our who has the best and most accurate insight into prices of these metals come year year.  Let's learn about market dynamics. And let's have some fun.

A reminder to all members -- please send in item descriptions for the coins which you want in the June auction by May 31th. It is generally concluded that each coin or each lot of coins should have value of at least $10.  The email address for sending a listing is john@tampabaycoinclub.org.

Tampa Bay Coin Club held the second of three scheduled coin shows in 2010. According to Bourse Chairman, Mark Palermo, all tables were filled and attendance was reported as good.

On a different note, I do not know how many people who are members of local coin clubs are members of the ANA. In my opinion everyone should be a member as the annual dues of $35 are quite affordable and the benefits are many including access to the Manley Library. One of their most recent benefits announced was that ANA members could have digital access to Coin World magazine and titles. The membership also allows access to Coin Values, and Paper Money ValuesAs this report is written I can attest to having read the  January and February issues of Coin World which came out. Now I must admit that I have grown to like a hard copy magazine which can then be saved, only to be discarded months down the road.  It took a little manuvering to get the format and proper size to read the on-line version, but it was a "fun" read.  Not sure how the advertisers will like it as in my case, I "breezed" (expended no time) through the advertisements -- kind of like recording a TV program, watching when I am ready to watch and "fast-forwarding" through the ads. So ANA members give it a try -- (I can just hear some of the "old boys" complaining!!!).  I believe the one-year access has a current value of about $10.00 and there is no indication that the program of free access will extend beyond one year -- but that is OK, members can form their own opinions of usefulness and a decision, one year down the road.

We continue to look for new ways to make our web site more attractive and interesting.  There is one interesting development from the web site -- there have been several inquiries from non-members and people in the area.  So, people are looking at us.  Hope to see everyone at our March 6th Coin Show at the American Legion.
